Chapter Nine

Danny

I leaned my head back against the wall and stared across the room at the opposing wall. I'd been hiding out in Patty's secret passage apartment since yesterday. I hadn't realized until I'd lain down in the spare bedroom that everything that was said inside of Patty's office could be heard right through the ventilation system.

I doubted Patty knew or he'd have fixed that ages ago.

I had heard the most interesting things. One of them being that Patty needed my skills with business and finance more than he knew. The first chance I got, I was going to go over his finances and see what was legitimate and what wasn't, and then I'd try and help him make it legitimate. I didn't relish him going to prison for breaking the law.

The more interesting thing I'd heard was the worry in Patty's voice when I didn't immediately show up after being rescued from the DEA. Patty had gotten on the phone and started yelling after ordering some of his men to scour the city for me. While I didn't like the idea of upsetting Patty, it was nice to know he was worried enough about me to be upset.

It would be nice if he'd tell me that to my face.

The voices in Patty's office went silent. Considering it was the early morning hours, that wasn't surprising. Patty and the others were most likely headed off to their beds for the night. I wish I could say the same.

I had a plan, and I couldn't carry it out when the bar was open. So, I sat there for another couple of hours after everything went quiet. I'd hung out in the bar often enough to know the closing routine.

After everyone filed out, the closing crew had to clean the place then set it up for the next day. Patty worked on the books for a while as he waited for the place to empty before he sought out his bed. It was a tossup whether he'd seek out his bed with someone else or not.

I was hoping not. I was growing tired of watching Patty hook up with stupid little boy toys, especially when he didn't pay me any attention. At least not the kind of attention I desired.

Maybe, after I helped Patty get out of his current fix, it was time to see what else was out there in the world. I wasn't far from graduating. Nothing said I had to stay in Chicago. I could move to another city and start a life that didn't involve Patty or the Irish mob.

I didn't like it, and the pain in my chest just reinforced that, but I wasn't sure I had any other choice. Patty was never going to see me as anything other than a burden, and I needed someone in my life that wanted me to be in theirs because they loved me. Not because they felt a need to take care of me.

I glanced at the clock on the nightstand.
